For anyone unfortunate enough to miss the first Community Resilience Symposium this past Saturday at the Hildene Farm in Manchester, this is your next chance to engage in the ongoing discussion on how we can build a more resilient future together.

We'll be bringing in guest speakers from our agency & non-profit partners to lend their insight on how you, as residents of Bennington County, can help expedite wetland restoration work in our community. 

Presenters: 

Mary Beth Poli; Vermont Association for Wetland Science & Ducks Unlimited

Mary Beth Poli is a certified Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) and Regional Biologist in the Mitigation Program at Ducks Unlimited, Inc. She manages in-lieu-fee wetland and stream mitigation projects in VT and eastern NY. Previously, she worked for the US Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Otter Creek Engineering doing plant, soil, and wetland science work in VT.

Zapata Courage; District Wetland Ecologist, Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation

Zapata is currently a Wetland Ecologist for the State of VT. She works with landowners and consultants reviewing wetland delineations and providing technical assistance, including feedback on proposed dam removal, floodplain reconnection, and wetland restoration projects. The Wetlands Program supports water quality improvement projects and Zapata manages permitting, regulatory, and compliance issues related to wetlands in her region. Prior to working at DEC, Zapata worked as a private consultant, field biologist, and environmental outdoor educator; just ask her about her field work in Kenya with the white-bearded vulture, trapping fisher in the Sierra Nevada Mtns of CA, or radio collaring wolves in Ely, MN!

Josh Carvajal; River Management Engineer, Vermont Agency of Natural Resources

Josh is the River Management Engineer who covers Southwestern Vermont for the Agency of Natural Resources. His work as a Stream Alteration Engineer with the Vermont Rivers Program was pivotal to the restoration efforts following Tropical Storm Irene and the recent flooding this past summer. Josh is a great friend of the District and a valuable resource for Bennington County.
